Return to Campus: 2012 Homecoming Travel Guide

For alumni and students alike, Homecoming stands out as the greatest red-and-black celebration on the annual UC calendar. This year’s party culminates on Saturday, Oct. 6, when groups from more than 100 different colleges and organizations welcome back thousands of lifelong Bearcats.

Presented by the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association, UC Homecoming 2012 will turn the clock back, thanks to the Homecoming theme “We Love Lucy: A Flashback to Yesteryear.” Beyond recalling Lucille Ball, Lucy is also the name of UC’s real-life binturong mascot, which often makes the short trip up Vine Street from the Cincinnati Zoo to visit campus.

Game and Parade
Given the retro theme, the Homecoming football game fittingly finds the Bearcats playing Miami University in one of the oldest football rivalries west of the Allegheny Mountains. Game time is 7 p.m. at Nippert Stadium.
The annual Homecoming parade starts at 3 p.m., and fans of TV’s “Amazing Race” will see familiar faces coming down Clifton Avenue. One of UC’s outstanding young alumni, Cindy Chiang Halvorsen, Eng ’04, and her husband, Ernie, will be parade grand marshals after becoming this year’s “Amazing Race” champions.

Hotel Discounts and Specials
If you’re coming “home” for 2012 Homecoming, stay close to campus at the following hotels:
  • Hampton Inn - $119 per night for all UC alumni
  • Kingsgate Marriott - Loyal Bearcat and William Howard Taft Society donors will get 10 percent off of their stay
Other Weekend Events and Discounts

Join UC Alumni Nationwide As We ‘Light The Night’ to Fight Cancer

We learned as UC students that helping others is part of what Bearcats do.  It’s even better when we can do that together as alumni.  The upcoming Light the Night Walk for cancer is a great way to do both — an emotionally rewarding experience for everyone who joins the cause, and a tangible way to help others.

This fall, the UC Alumni Association continues its partnership with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by offering important this community service opportunity in 14 cities across the U.S.  The LLS stages “Light The Night” fundraising walks each year, and you can join teams of UC alumni united as “Champions for Cures” to fight blood cancer — leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

Helping LLS also strengthens UC.  This year, LLS will fund four cancer-fighting research grants at UC, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Hoxworth Blood Center, totaling about $2 million over the life of the grants.

Please click on a city/region near you below to learn more and participate. All walks will take place in the evening hours, with specific times and meeting locations to be provided after registration.

Faculty/Staff Campaign Exceeds Goal 3 Years Early

UC Blue Ash faculty/staff celebrate

This week University of Cincinnati faculty and staff celebrated a record-breaking year in donations to their faculty and staff campaign.

More than 55 percent of UC employees gave to the 2012 Proudly Cincinnati Faculty/Staff Campaign, moving far beyond the previous record and surpassing President Williams' ambitious target of 50 percent employee participation as outlined in the UC2019> Strategic Plan.

Collective support from faculty and staff helped reach (and exceed) this goal three full years ahead of schedule, pointing to a committed workforce that supports UC's ambitious goals far beyond the classroom, office or laboratory.

This year, UC employees contributed a total of $8.6 million dollars to the university. At UC Clermont College, 100 percent of faculty and staff made donations!

Medical Campus faculty/staff
President Williams celebrated their success by throwing an ice cream party just for faculty and staff across four of UC's campuses on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day, August 14. Sweet treats and great times were had by all!

We are so thankful for our dedicated faculty and staff who believe and invest in UC's mission!
