UC Alumni Give Thanks: Education Leads Alumnus to Career in NYC

Many UC alumni are thankful for their UC education and experience. Follow along with this series through November (also known as the thankful month) as UC alumni give thanks to UC. If you would like to share your story and show your appreciation for the university, please e-mail proudlycincinnati@uc.edu.

Justin Grzeszczak is thankful for his UC experience for many reasons. Justin says his education gave him the opportunity to learn in the classroom and gain real-world work experience. Through those experiences, he gained the education, confidence, and abilities to succeed in the 21st century workplace.

"UC's top notch education programs helped me become a top performer in my company," Justin proudly explained. He also credits the diversity at UC for helping expand his world view.

"My time at UC left me with many lifelong friends and memories. Some of the best memories include attending the Orange bowl and Sugar bowl, Rushing Nippert Stadium, moving into Calhoun Hall, listening to lectures given by Fortune 500 executives, and my senior year capstone project," Justin said.

When asked why he is 'Proudly Cincinnati,' Justin said, "Because Cincinnati is a city where world class organizations, top notch academics, and an innovative workforce come together to create a thriving city. And also because the university is the #hottestcollegeinamerica."

Justin graduated from UC in 2012 with BA in organizational leadership, and works in New York City as an executive recruiter. He has also worked with companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, Metlife, The Fiat Group (Fiat, Ferrari, and Ashton Martin), Wrigley, BASF, Ferrero, Mars, and Remy Martin.

Jack Laub: WWII Vet, Basketball Star, and Lifelong Bearcat

Jack Laub (A&S 1950) is a proud, lifelong Bearcat with some amazing talents. Since his time at UC, Jack has traveled the world and gained some incredible life experiences, but he will always treasure the time he spent both on and off the basketball courts at UC.

Most famously known for his basketball career, Laub began as a varsity player for Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY, joining the City College of New York after graduation. Laub played from 1943-1945 under coach Nat Holman, and has been recognized for his impressive performance, being elected to the City College of New York Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
Laub during World War II

After attending City College of New York, Laub joined the Merchant Marines during World War II in 1944.  For his service and devotion to the United States in the liberation of France during WWII, Laub was conferred the honor of “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor, one of the highest honors awarded in France, this past June. After being discharged as a Lt. Sr. grade in 1946 as a Staff Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, he was awarded a basketball scholarship at the University of Cincinnati to pursue medical school as a psychology major.

Laub, nicknamed the "Black Cat", helped lead UC Bearcats Basketball to four conference championships, putting Cincinnati on the map as one of the top college basketball teams in the nation.  Since Laub played two years of basketball at City College and four years at UC, he is the only player in NCAA history to play for six varsity years.

After graduating from UC, Laub was one of the first two Bearcats to be drafted into the NBA in 1950.  Laub was recruited by the Baltimore Bullets, but was soon traded to the Minneapolis Lakers and eventually Scranton Miners.  While he was with the Miners, Laub helped the team win two championships.

"Black Cat" Laub
Laub stayed true to his connection with UC however, as he was eventually asked to be the university’s first assistant basketball coach. Laub was ecstatic to return to his alma mater, later serving as head scout for UC. As an assistant coach, Laub helped UC earn its first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament in 1951.

Laub left basketball for a time, joining Pfizer & Co. in 1954. Laub devoted his business career to reducing prescription costs for consumers, and together with business partners, helped pioneer the idea of discount drugs. He helped open the first discounted drug store chain in the New York area, and later helped open the first mail-order pharmacy, streamlining the purchase of generic drugs. Because of these achievements, UC's McMicken College of Arts & Sciences honored Laub with the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award.

In 1959, Laub returned to his basketball roots as head coach of the U.S. Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy at age 32, but has remained a proud Bearcat ever since!

Read more about Jack in UC Magazine.

2011 DAAP Fashion Show attracts international attention

It's not surprising the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning 2011 Fashion Show sold out and attracted an international audience, with attendees coming from as far as Europe. The highly-anticipated, 60th Annual DAAP Fashion Show, displayed students' fashion creations during a professionally modeled, choreographed and lighted event.

Not only has DAAP's fashion show gained international attention, the School of Design has been recognized as an international elite. In 2009, BusinessWeek named UC's School of Design to the "A-list" of design schools, which includes the world's top 30 design programs. I.D. (International Design) magazine listed UC among the top 10 design schools - the only public institution to make the list.

DAAP's internationally renowned design program has produced numerous award-winning designers. One UC alum, Stan Herman, a native New Yorker and 1950 graduate of DAAP, is a three-time Coty award-winning designer and past president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Herman pioneered the designer uniform, for clients including FedEx, McDonald's, Amtrak, Avis, TWA, United Airlines and Jet Blue. As past president of CFDA, he led the launch of the “Fashion Targets Breast Cancer” initiative that raises public awareness and funds for the breast cancer cause. He was also served as the president of 7th on Sixth for seven years and has been a best-selling designer on QVC. In 2006, he was recognized with CFDA’s highest honor - the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Herman is just one example of the various success stories that started in DAAP. Check out this year's fashion designs from the 2011 DAAP fashion show, and just think, you may be wearing some of these students' creations one day!

New York (Bearcat) State of Mind

Shadaia Gooden, CEAS ’02, is one of the leaders of the UC Alumni Association’s New York alumni network and the Proudly Cincinnati Campaign Committee for New York. Here she talks about her UC experience and how she helps other New York alumni connect with their university.

On fellow Bearcats finding each other so far from campus:
“People who have been out of school for awhile and live somewhere else just want something to reconnect with. Any Cincinnati connection will strike a chord. ‘Oh, you went to UC? So did I!’ No matter what their UC experience has been, they still have that in common, which offers a new opportunity to re-engage in some way.”

On engaging a variety of alumni:
“The New York region is so large and people are so spread out. There’s so much diversity here — so many things that take people’s time and attention. A UC athletics event may draw a group of people, but many others aren’t interested in that. We try to find some balance in our events and activities to reach as many alumni as possible.”

On discovering each alum’s potential connection point:
“Everyone is so different — who they are, what they want. When I talk with people, I speak from my own experience, my love for UC, and memories of my time there. Sharing that enthusiasm often gets them reminiscing, and pretty soon they might want to get more involved with the local alumni network. There’s a strong group of alumni in New York, so there are lots of opportunities.”

On the origin of alumni involvement:
“Developing a strong alumni base starts freshman year or earlier — from your first interactions with the university. I was fortunate. I came to UC from Youngstown, and was driven to become very involved in many on-campus activities, from athletics to service organizations. My UC experience has a lot to do with my efforts to remain involved. Being around other alums reminds me of my experience and keeps it more alive for me.”

On the benefits of her own involvement:
“The most rewarding part is getting to meet so many people. We already have UC in common, which opens the door to wonderful connections I’d never make otherwise.”

On specific opportunities for alumni to connect and support UC:
“There’s a lot of potential with the UC Alumni Association’s 1819 and UC Where You Are initiatives. The 1819 opportunity is great for our alums who haven’t been very engaged with UC, but are open to taking a small step forward and supporting the university. UC Where You Are can help ‘make’ a UC community no matter where you live. It’s perfect for alumni who are relocating or just trying to make connections with other Bearcats in their area.”

UC Professor explains Distance Learning

According to Nancy Jennings, PhD and associate professor in UC’s Department of Communications, distance learning is quickly becoming popular for people of all ages and places seeking more convenient alternatives to continued education. That’s a major reason UC has gone to great lengths to expand its digital classroom offerings.

So whether you’re living in Chicago, DC, New York, or anywhere outside Cincinnati’s city limits, you might not know it, but UC classes are still within your reach.

In 2010, more than 3,000 people enrolled in Distance Learning Programs at UC. Distance learning takes course instruction online, breaking free from the walls and desks of a traditional classroom.  Rather than regularly attending class at a scheduled time, students just hop online to receive instruction at their convenience.

Last year the average age of a UC distance learning student was 35, and the majority of those students were part-time.  This just goes to show that you no longer have to be in your late teens/early 20s or be able to attend school every day and earn a bachelors or graduate degree.  All you need is an internet connection. There are countless working adults pursuing bachelors and masters degrees online while managing full-time jobs or family!
Missing that UC education or been putting off starting your next degree for too long? You can take advantage of distance learning opportunities at UC no matter where you live.  Watch this video to hear Jennings’ take on how distance learning has evolved over the years and the advantages it offers to both students and faculty.

Bearcat Basketball...from NY to DC

Alumni from Cincinnati, New York and even a couple from California converged on The Hill  last week for a pre-game event in anticipation of the Bearcats' first-round Big East tournament game against South Florida. Guests enjoyed an exclusive, reserved room in the bar’s upper level. President Williams took some time to stop by and celebrate a season of success in one of college basketball’s toughest conferences.

Even though UC’s big east tournament run ended with Notre Dame, spirits are high for UC's return to the big dance. And if our NY pre-game event was any indication of the fun we'll have this Thursday, watch out DC!

Check out our photos to see if you recognize any of the Bearcats we met up with in NY last week. Like our chances against Missouri on Thursday night??? How far do you have the Bearcats in your bracket?

UC Love Stories: Sharon and Bill Drewry

Sharon and Bill Drewry (Class of '92) at the 2010 Sugar Bowl.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner… and what could be a better way for us to celebrate than by sharing some of our favorite UC love stories! Today, we’re bringing you the story of Sharon and Bill Drewry.

To get to the beginning of Sharon (Thieken) and Bill Drewry’s relationship, one must first hear the story of Sharon’s… we’ll call it an “unpredictable” sleep schedule.

Sharon explains, “I'm a pretty laid back person, but I show stress when I sleep, generally by sleep walking or talking.  The night before a big physics test, my roommates and I were up late studying, and I was having a hard time with the material.  Later in the middle of the night, I had a dream that velocity was an object that I had misplaced in our dorm room.

“I woke up standing in the middle of the room, frantically lifting and looking under everything in sight.  I had completely trashed our room.  All of my roommates were now awake, trying to figure out what I was looking for in such a frenzy.  I woke myself up screaming, ‘I TOLD YOU, I'M LOOKING FOR VELOCITY!!!’ The next morning,  my roommates told half of our freshman engineering class about it. I took a lot of friendly jabs for that one!”

This was in 1987, when Sharon was an engineering major. Cut to 1989… although Sharon had changed her major to personnel and industrial relations, she would soon learn that the “Velocity” incident would follow her throughout her career at UC.

Sharon and some friends were at the Yacht Club – a favorite hangout – when they ran into Bill, whom Sharon only knew as a casual acquaintance with poor penmanship. “We didn’t know each other well, and I could never remember his name. But I knew his handwriting was absolutely horrible, so he was always the ‘guy with the bad handwriting,’ to me,” explains Sharon.

Although Sharon and Bill didn’t know each other well prior to that evening at the Yacht Club, they spent a lot of time plotting exactly how she would set Bill up with one of her roommates, whom Bill was interested in. But fate had other plans: that fall, Sharon and Bill seemed to run into each other everywhere on and off campus. In November, Bill asked Sharon for a date to the Cincinnati Museum Center, followed by views of the city from the observation deck on top of Carew Tower.

After a few dates, Sharon decided to share her sleep issues with Bill.  “I started to tell him the ‘velocity’ story.  He stopped me mid-way through and said, ‘Oh my God, I'm dating Velocity!’”  Bill, it turned out, had heard the tale of Sharon’s midnight rampage from mutual friends in the same freshman engineering class Sharon and her roommates were in.

“Apparently my notoriety had spread much farther than I thought… it was SO embarrassing,” Sharon says with a smile.

Despite her status as a bit of an urban legend, Sharon and Bill’s relationship continued its forward-moving “velocity”. Nearly two years after their 1992 graduation, Bill asked Sharon to meet him for dinner in Downtown Cincinnati.

“We met and had dinner at The Palms restaurant,” recalls Sharon. “It was a beautiful evening, so after dinner, Bill suggested that we head up to the Carew Tower observation deck of old times sake. He proposed to me that night above the downtown lights, at the site of our first date. It was very romantic!”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Do you have a great UC love story to share? Comment below and tell us how you met your spouse or significant other at UC! And check back for more in this special series of "UC Love Stories."

UC Professor Gives Sneak Peek of Feb. 16th NY Event

Still sticking to your New Years resolution to live a healthier lifestyle and maintain a more well-balanced diet? We hope so! Either way, no time is better than now to be educated of those internal forces you simply can't control when trying to lose weight.

According to UC professor and Director of the Cincinnati Diabetes and Research Center, Randy Seeley, PhD, America's obesity epidemic is driven more by the conversation between our body and brain and less by proven weight loss therapies and drugs or even our own will power to put the fork down.

Randy shares a sneak peek of next week's visit to New York where he'll host a seminar for UC alumni to learn from his expertise in obesity and weight loss challenges. Join Randy and your fellow New York alumni on Feb. 16th at the Princeton Club of New York. For more details and to register for this event, contact Lindsay Deeter – lindsay.deeter@uc.edu or 513-556-0435.

Strong Bearcat Ties to 2011 Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLV pits two of the NFL’s oldest and most storied franchises against each other as the Green Bay Packers face the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday, February 6th. The two franchises have nine Super Bowl wins combined.
But here's some fun trivia you may not know: UC red and black runs through BOTH teams!

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin spent time patrolling the sidelines of Nippert Stadium as defensive backs coach in 1999 and 2000 under then head coach Rick Minter.

Former Bearcat Brandon Underwood, cornerback for the Packers, played under Mark Dantonio and Brian Kelly at UC. Underwood played in 10 regular season games for the Packers and had two tackles against the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship.

So no matter who wins this Sunday's big game, a former Bearcat will claim one of the sports world’s most prestigious rings and we wish them both luck!

San Diego DAAP Alum Credits First Published Book to UC Education

One DAAP alum just published his first book, Binding Light & Shadow to Architecture. Basing it on his master thesis completed at UC, Robert Goldyn wanted UC to be one of the first to hear his good news!

Currently living in San Diego, Goldyn is a designer with over 6 years of professional experience in a wide range and scale of highly competitive architectural offices across the country. After receiving his Bachelors of Science in Architecture from The University of Cincinnati, he continued his education at the Ecoles D’Art Americanes De Fontainebleau – Beaux-Arts Summer program (The American School of Fine Arts located in Fontainbleau, France). Robert graduated with a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati.

The UC alum credits his professional success to his UC education. “To me UC was very important in providing me with opportunities to work in offices across the nation; from San Diego and San Francisco to Charleston in large, small, and medium firms in residential, government, and commercial projects,” says Goldyn. “This helped me to transition smoothly and easily into the professional world after graduation.”

Goldyn recently sent us the above video about his experience at UC and the impact it has had on his life. Check it out and tell us how UC has influenced your professional career by commenting below!

UCF Trustees and NY Residents Instrumental in New UC, EPA Water Initiative

Have you ever wondered where your water comes from? Do you know the steps of purification that happens before it comes out of your tap?

On January 18th, UC launched a joint partnership with the EPA and created the Water Technology Innovation Cluster (WTIC). The initiative is geared towards research and development of new water technologies for better availability and usage.

Right now, nearly 40% of the world’s population does not have a clean supply of water. And this percentage will grow, potentially leaving 50% of the world’s population with severe water shortages by 2050.

UC President Gregory H. Williams and EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson committed to work together to:

• Conduct joint research and collaborate on innovative technology development.
• Include undergraduate and graduate students in the discussion, and emphasize courses of study in the environmental sciences.
• Identify innovative practices to advance new water technologies at local and global levels.

Two members of the University of Cincinnati Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Jerry Leamon, Business ’73, and Jeff Williams, DAAP ’75, HON ’09, were major drivers in WTIC’s formation. Jerry and Jeff both reside in New York City.

UC and the EPA already have a longstanding relationship, which will be further strengthened by this new partnership. WTIC hopes to ultimately become the world’s leading source for practical solutions and sustainable practices in water usage.

Have you given much thought to environmental conservation?

What do you think about this new partnership? Let us know!

UC Professor Previews Healthy Living Event in Big Apple

With the dawn of 2011, weight loss seems to be a recurring theme this time of year and has researchers at UC asking some of the same questions as others: Why is our ability to lose weight with diet or drugs so limited? And why has the development of new weight-loss therapies been so slow?

A large research effort at UC is focused on just these questions. UC professor and Director of the Cincinnati Diabetes and Research Center, Randy Seeley, PhD, says that part of the answer lies in how our brains process the various signals associated with the food to control when we put our forks down. On February 16th, he’s inviting New Yorkers to the Princeton Club of New York to join the discussion and learn more about how our bodies and brains communicate about food. Randy gives a sneak peak of the discussion:

NBC's hit reality show, “Biggest Loser,” relies on the element of competition to give dieters an edge in the battle with their bodies. Contestants are pitted against one another with a large cash prize as an added inducement to lose the most weight. However, dangling monetary incentives won’t change the basic relationship between the body’s inherent bias to defend an established weight. Cash may stiffen our will, but it can also promote unhealthy short cuts.

The difficulty of losing large amounts of weight can’t be overstated. The notion that weight control is strictly a matter of self-control and will power flies in the face of strong evidence that body weight regulation has a genetic component that can present an enormous handicap to even the most disciplined. Indeed, there are many examples of thinned and trimmed celebrities who having tapped some inner strength to achieve striking weight reduction, and then gradually relent to other internal pressures and regain what was miraculously lost.

The benefits to lifestyle modification and maximized fitness—at any weight—cannot be stressed enough. However there are limits to the amount of weight we can lose with diet and exercise alone. Few good options exist that assist with what can be accomplished with lifestyle changes. The reality is that while some benefits can be obtained from medications, on average, individuals lose only 5 to 10 lbs when compared to people receiving an inactive placebo.

Bring your insights and appetite to the Princeton Club at 6:30 PM on February 16th. For more details and to register for this event, contact Molly O’Connor – lindsay.deeter@uc.edu or 513-556-0435.

Unique UC Research Center Fights the Flu

The flu. We’ve all had it: the aching, the coughing, the fevers. For most of us, a bout with the flu can’t be over soon enough. But for researchers at UC, the flu is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to intriguing illnesses.

The University of Cincinnati’s Midwest Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (MI-CEID) exists for the sole purpose of researching, preventing and containing biological threats throughout the country: bioterrorism, biological threats, pandemic outbreaks and yes, even seasonal flu viruses.

Malak Kotb, Ph.D., chair of the department of molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology at UC’s College of Medicine, oversees the MI-CEID program, which is a collaborative effort between several medical disciplines, including researchers within UC, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), local hospitals, regional health departments and more. According to Kotb, the joint approach has been a key to the center’s success:

Solutions to disease treatment and prevention require innovation – and you can’t be innovative and be in silos. And without private support to spur on the ground-breaking research we do day in and day, essential studies – including those that can save lives or reduce medical costs – would not exist.

So if you get hit with the flu bug this year – and we hope you don’t! – take heart; thanks to the unique vision at UC’s MI-CEID, future treatments will be more timely and effective than ever. And that’s nothing to sneeze at!
